On Tuesday, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)announced the 2014 performance results for the 333 organizations that participated in the Medicare Shared Savings Program (MSSP) for Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs). 

CMS reported that the MSSP saved $465 million in 2014. Approximately one quarter of  MSSP-ACOs (92), were able to reduce spending by $806 million and received shared savings payments totaling $341 million. CMS also reported that:

  • About 27% (89) of ACOs were successful in lowering costs but did not earn a shared savings payment because they did not meet quality thresholds;

  • No Track 2 ACOs will repay losses to CMS; and

  • Over half (181) of ACOs in the program did not meet either cost or quality thresholds required to earn a shared savings payment. 

Additionally, CMS announced year three performance results for the 20 organizations enrolled in the Pioneer ACO Model. Since 2012, 12 of the 32 inaugural Pioneer ACOs have exited the program. In 2014:   

  • The program achieved $120 million in Medicare savings;

  • 11 Pioneer ACOs received $82 million in shared savings; and    

  • 3 Pioneer ACOs will repay CMS for losses totaling $9 million.
